The first 155 tons of Burley tobacco were produced in Bulgaria in 1967, mainly for the needs of the Bulgarian cigarette industry. The tobacco was of average quality. In the next twenty years the annual production reached 5 - 8 thousand tons and currently varies between 2 - 3 thousand tons.

Production of Burley tobacco exists in Southern Bulgaria in the following regions: Pazardjik, Plovdiv, Yambol and Sliven as well as in North Bulgaria in: Silistra, Pleven, Vratza, Montana and Vidin.

The conditions for growing Burley tobacco are relatively better in the Northern Bulgarian Region and it became the main producing area for this tobacco type.

There are possibilities for production of 5 - 6 thousand tons high quality Burley tobacco in the country, if the characteristics of the sub - regions as well as the application of the relevant technologies and high level of mechanisation are strictly observed
