While the CMEA (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance) existed, the Bulgarian average annual production amounted to 140 thousand tons including 100 - 120 thousand tons of Oriental, 20 - 25 thousand tons of Virginia and 5 - 6 thousand tons of Barley.
 

The new Tobacco and Tobacco Products Law, the level of Bulgarian tobacco science as well as the experience of Bulgarian tobacco farmers in production of high quality tobaccos are good reasons to expect a constant and steady annual production of about 90 - 100 thousand tons at minimum of the above three types:

- Oriental tobacco - 60 - 65 thousand tons
- Virginia tobacco - 20 - 25 thousand tons
- Burley tobacco - 5 - 8 thousand ton
